What is Brazilian jiu-jitsu?

BJJ is a modern and highly effective martial art. It specialises in ground grappling and submission techniques, as well as incorporating takedowns from judo and wrestling. It‘s also an essential part of mixed martial arts (MMA). Click here to learn more.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes, we offer a week long no strings attached free trial. Click here to book your free trial week pass.

What do I need to bring?

For the first class wear shorts and a t-shirt, and bring a full bottle of water. If you are attending a gi class, we can provide a gi for you to wear during your trial.

Is it suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely. Most of our students are beginners and we are very welcoming and helpful to newcomers. We’ll guide you through everything, starting with the very basics.

Do I need to get fit/lose weight before I start?

No, just jump in! You can work at your own pace and take breaks if you need them. Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic way to build your fitness and get in shape. It’s much more fun than going to the gym and you’ll naturally start to push your own limits as you improve.

How does Brazilian jiu-jitsu differ from karate, taekwondo, kung fu, Japanese jujutsu etc.?

BJJ does away with traditions such as kata (choreographed routines) and places a greater emphasis on live-sparring, known as rolling. We believe that constantly battle-testing our techniques in rolling is essential to make them work against a resisting opponent. As most of our time is spent grappling on the ground, rolling is both safe and accessible for people of all abilities, as well as being incredibly fun!
